Astrid S, Lush Electronic Pop Ingénue is an international pop sensation with over 1 billion listens on Spotify. She has a No. 1 single in her home country of Norway; has a five-time platinum single, “Hurts so Good”; won a Grammy Award in Norway and opened for openly gay artist Troye Sivan in Europe and North America.

For the readers out there, how would best describe your sound?

I would describe it as lush electronic pop music with some urban influences and organic elements.

You quit school to attend your musical career. Any regrets and any plans to complete your education?

No regrets! I thank my parents every day for letting me pursue my dream and quit school back when I was 17. However, I still do plan to finish high school.

You have a large gay following. Why do you think you have mass appeal to the younger LGBTQ community?

I was lucky to tour with Troye Sivan back in 2016, in North America and in Europe. I think that’s where it all started, and after the tour I think a lot of his fans started to follow me. And from there they probably spread the word to their friends.

So, it’s just grown in a natural way, I think. I’m extremely grateful for their support. I have so much love and respect for them!

Your new song an orchestral pop ballad. Tell us more about the song.

It was a song I wrote almost two years ago now. It’s been a long process finishing the song, and the best feeling in the world is to finally have it out there! I wanted to make something influenced by music from the ’80s, how all the songs have their own identity and personality. You can put on a song and instantly know what song it is.

Also, there is something nostalgic about ’80s music that I like and wanted to try and capture with “Emotion.”

As with all generations, musical artists are compared against their peers.  How do you think you compare and contrast to Halsey, Zara Larsson, Bea Miller and Alessia Cara?

I think we’re all hard-working and talented young female artists who express ourselves differently though our music, what we wear, say and do, which makes it exciting.

People can relate to us in different ways, if it’s the music, our personality or what we stand for.

What is next for you?

I’m currently working on an album, while planning a tour for next year and releasing more music.

Something no one knows about you:

I don’t think that there is anything no one knows about me!

Favorite way to relax and unwind:

I love to hang out with my friends and just have long conversations about anything. I also like to run, paint and cook.

One person you could spend one hour with and what would you do:

I would spend one hour with Whitney Houston and sing Karaoke.

The one person you could record a duet with and why:

So many! This question is really difficult. Troye Sivan and Charli XCX were the first things that popped into my head. Probably because I’ve been listening to “1999” lately. That song and collab is so much fun. It would be fun do something with one of them or even both! I love their music!

Favorite Song by Genre:

  • Hip Hop: Rosalia, “Malamente”
